° About Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen, also called "Playa" by the locals, is a beautiful beach-side city located on the coast of the Caribbean Sea and in the heart of the Mayan Riviera. The city is about 45 min south of famous Cancun and about 4 hours north of the Belize-Mexico border.
Playa del Carmen is named for" Our Lady of Mount Carmel", who is the patron saint of Cancún. The first recorded visitors to the beaches of what is now Playa del Carmen came during the Early Classic Period (a.d. 300-600) of the Mayan civilization. Then called Xaman-Ha, or "waters of the north," Playa del Carmen was a rest stop of sorts for travelers making their way from the great cities of the Mayan world to the island of Cozumel.
Playa used to be a small and very quiet Fishing village only crossed by tourists to reach the famous Scuba Diving reefs in Cozumel Island.
Today, Playa del Carmen is the main city of the "Riviera Maya" with hourly ferries crossing to Cozumel, Cruiseships stopping at Calica on their way to Central and South America and the world famous "Quinta Avenida", a 40 blocks long Pedestrian walkway with hundreds of Restaurants, Shop, Bars, Night clubs......etc, a block away from the beach.
Just south of the main urban area is "Playacar", a residential and tourist development where most of the All Inclusive Resorts will be found. PDC Kiteboarding is located on the beach of the southest All inclusive Resort of Playacar Hotel zone, the Sandos Playacar Resort. (BACK TO MENU)
JUNE/ JULY/ AUGUST
This is the hottest time of the year in Playa, especially mid-July to August. During these months Playa fills up and the beaches are full of vacationers mostly from Europe.
Summer is also the rainy season but rain is usually quiet short. Quite often you are happy it rained as it tends to cool things down a little, at least for a short while
SEPTEMBER/ OCTOBER/NOVEMBER
This is the most quiet time of the year after Summer time and before Winter High season. The air temperature is falling but the water stays warm and enjoyable
This is also the hurrican season, from June till November, and Tropical storms are expected on the Atlantic coast so keep an eye open on the weather forcast.
DECEMBER/ JANUARY/ FEBUARY/ MARCH/ APRIL/ MAY
This is the best time of the year to come and visit Playa del Carmen. Weather is perfect and you can expect 4/5 days a week of perfect wind condition for Kiteboarding. At this time of the year start the "Nortes" as we call them, some North cold front coming from the USA and bringing us each time 2 or 3 days straight of North wind blowing 25 to 35 knots. Those days, PDCK organizes and takes you to our second location: The Lagoon of Isla Blanca.
This is the time of the year when you get the less amount of day light. (BACK TO MENU)
